本所學生需修滿至少36學分，包括15必修學分（含碩士論文寫作6學分）、21選修學分，並通過碩士學位論文口試始得畢業。
本所以社會科學研究方法為原則，探討、觀察、分析人類社會的現象，並做出具有系統性、控制性、經驗性及批判性研究（Kerlinger，1986），因此開設「研究方法」做為碩士班一年級核心基礎必修課程，一年級下學期基礎必修課程「歐洲時事專題」中藉由歐洲及全球重大新聞議題養成研究生熟練地轉化、應用、分析、整合和評估從觀察、經驗、反思、交流之中推斷出、產生出的資訊，批判性思維能力不局限於特定的學科領域，無論從事何種行業，批判性思維都是必備的核心能力，善於思考和系統解決問題是研究生重要的核心資產能力。學術論文作為開展學術活動的必要項目之一，二年級基礎必修「學術論文寫作」的課程設計則是為了研究生提供輔助性指導，教導研究生如何開始學術論文、收集評估資料、起草論文、加入引文，輔以註解等相關撰寫技巧。
本所以歐盟及歐洲諸國政經社文環為研究主體，專業選修課程針對政經議題規劃「歐盟整合與共同政策專題」、「歐洲經貿專題」等課程；社文部分則是「歐洲語言教育專題」、「歐洲電影文化與社會專題」、「歐洲宗教與文化專題」、「歐洲藝術專題」等課程，此外2019年本所獲得歐盟莫內計畫補助，開設涵蓋政經社文環之「歐盟與環境衛生：政策、成就與主要挑戰」模組課程，滿足學生多元選擇之需求。
To obtain a Master degree (MA) from the Graduate Institute of European Studies (GIES), students are required to:
(1) complete a minimum of 36 credits (15 mandatory and 21 elective),
(2) successfully propose their thesis and
(3) pass the oral examination for the MA thesis.
The program is rooted in the field of social sciences, exploring and analyzing political, economic, environmental, educational, social, historical phenomena in Europe. For that, we apply analytical and critical thinking approaches not limited to a specific discipline but interdisciplinary. We train the abilities to think analytically and focus on problem-solving skills - an important asset for graduates of our time. Our program follows international standards in applying research methods and emphasizes research ethics.
In addition, in 2019, the Graduate Institute received a grant from the European Union's Monet Programme to offer courses covering Environmental Health issues. (Jean Monnet Modules on "The European Union and Environmental Health: Policies, Achievements and Key Challenges").
